The Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) is a foundation governed by Article 14 and following of the Italian Civil Code. Established by Legislative Decree 269/03 and converted by Law no. 326/2003 (Article 4 of the Statute), IIT is financed by the State to conduct scientific research in the public interest for the purpose of technological development.

IIT operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Ministry of Education, University, and Research. It is overseen by the Corte dei Conti (national auditing body) in accordance with Law 259/58 (Art. 12).

Our mission, as stated in the Foundation Statute, is to promote excellence in basic and applied research and to foster the development of the national economy.

Construction and refurbishing of IIT's laboratories began in 2006 and was completed in 2009.

IIT is dedicated to cutting-edge science, efficiency, and transparency. We compile our key metrics four times a year and publish them in a presentation called "Facts and Figures." The most recent version is always available below.

The Gender Equality Plan outlines IIT's objectives for advancing equality between individuals of different genders and describes the measures IIT will implement in the coming years to achieve these goals. The plan aims to encourage a coordinated and focused approach to promoting gender equality and to facilitate the sharing and adoption of best practices within IIT.

Principal investigators (PIs) and facility coordinators are senior scientific staff who lead a research line or facility. They are responsible for implementing the scientific program, managing their portion of the budget, and coordinating their staff.

IIT's establishment as a foundation governed by the Italian Civil Code reflects a consistent legislative approach: granting parties with differing legal configurations the ability to operate in the public domain, irrespective of the general interest purpose pursued. In the case of IIT's governance model, an institutional framework is in place, primarily based on private law provisions, overseeing the current use of funds derived from the public finance system.
